A designer and painter, Mark Sheridan was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and studied at the Georgia School (now Institute) of Technology and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He lived and worked in Savannah before 1948, when he settled in nearby Ridgeland, South Carolina. During his career, he was an active, exhibiting member of the National Arts Club, Association of Georgia Artists and Savannah Art Club. In addition to oil paintings, he created murals for the Atlanta Theatre and the DeSoto Beach Club on Tybee Island, Georgia. A realist painter who often explored the limited palette and muted effects of tonalism in his art, he produced dramatic scenes of the riverfront, like Savannah River Stevedores, with its massive steamship navigating the wharves, towering over a small boat of stevedores searching for work.
