Washington Governor. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the 19th Governor of the State of Washington from 1985 until 1993. His father struggled with alcoholism which resulted in abuse to both young Booth and his mother, his parents divorced when he was at the age of four. His mother remarried Norton Clapp, a wealthy businessman whom served as CEO of Weyerhaeuser, a pulp and paper company. Gardner attained a Bachelor's degree in Business from the University of Washington in 1958 and received a Master's degree in Business Administrations from Harvard Business School. He launched his political career in Washington's State Senate from 1970 until 1973 and later served as president of a company (Laird Norton) owned by his stepfather. During his tenure as governor, he proposed major changes within the states schools and put forth efforts to allow health insurance available for the poor. Additionally, he made environmental issues part of his initiative. After leaving the governorship, Gardner continued to be an influential figure as he championed for passage of legislation (Washington's Death With Dignity Act) designated for the sensitive issue of an individual's right to die. It would fulfill the wishes of those whom suffered with incurable diseases and who's lives have been greatly incapacitated. He died of complications from Parkinson's disease.
