Maryland Governor. After graduating from Washington College, in 1795, he entered politics and served as a presidential elector for James Madison, (1808 to 1812). During the War of 1812, he served as Lieutenant Colonel in command of the 49th Regiment in the Maryland Militia. He also was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, (1811 to 1812) and served as a member of the Governor's Executive Council, (1833 to 1835). In 1836, he was elected as a Whig the 24th Governor of Maryland, serving until 1839. During his tenure, he advocated for a general system of education throughout the State, expressed a great deal of interest in the State's internal improvements and dealt with constitutional amendment changes. After leaving office, he lived in retirement until his death.
