Maryland Governor. After his father's death in 1800, he was adopted by his uncle, Osborn Sprigg. In 1815, he inherited Osborne's Prince George's County 1,000 acre estate in Northampton and managed the property. He also studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Prince George's County, Maryland. Entering politics, in 1819, he was elected as a Democrat Whig the 17th Maryland Governor, serving until 1822. During his administration, he supported the states' internal improvements and economic growth. After leaving office, he served as the president of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company and represented Prince George's County in the State Constitutional Convention, in 1850.
