Birge Davis Alexander passed away peacefully at home in San Antonio on September 29, 2004. He was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Kay Alexander of Manchaca, Texas, and Helen Davis Alexander of Baltimore, Maryland. He had four siblings, Marion Henderson and her husband Sam of Sabinal, Jane McKinney and her husband R. Kay of San Angelo, Kay Alexander of Marble Falls and Betty Rheiner and her husband Robert of San Antonio. He graduated from Sabinal High School. In 1933 he graduated from Southwest Texas State College in San Marcos with a B.S. Degree in Math. He married Lucia Huffman Johnson on September 18, 1933. Birge went on to graduate from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1939. He went to work for the C.A.A. and moved to Ft. Worth, Texas. He continued this work with the new Federal Aviation Administration going throughout Texas and the Southwest surveying land for proposed airports in this region. He received many honors and achievements during his life. He was a lifelong member of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers. He was honored by being chosen as Civil Engineer of the year in Texas in 1964. He later served as Area Manager for the Southwest Region of the F.A.A. for many years while living in Fort Worth. He retired to Austin in 1973, living with his wife in Pemberton Heights until her death in 1997. They had one child, Rebekah Sterling Alexander Shulman, wife of David G. Shulman, M.D. of San Antonio. He leaves two grandchildren, Lucia Jane Shulman Redmond and Birge David Shulman and their spouses, James R. Redmond, M.D. and Julia Elizabeth Webster Shulman. He has three loving great-grandchildren, Thomas, Rebekah and Ava Redmond. He also leaves behind beloved nieces and nephews, John Henderson Clary of Sabinal, Joan Price of San Antonio and her brother, Robert Rheiner of Bakersfield, California, Lynda Johnson Robb of McLean, Virginia, and her sister, Luci Baines Johnson of Austin, and all of their spouses. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 2, 2004, at the Johnson Family Cemetery near Stonewall, Texas, with Crofts Funeral Home, Johnson City, TX, officiating.
