U.S. Senator, C.S.A. Senator. He graduated from the University of Nashville Tennessee, in 1833, from Jefferson Medical College Pennsylvania, in 1836, then relocated to Washington, Arkansas, and practiced medicine. Entering politics, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate and served from March 4, 1861, to July 11, 1861. With the advent of the Civil War, he was expelled because he chose to support the Confederacy. He was then elected to the Confederate States Senate on September 20, 1864 and served until his death.
