From the Clarion-Ledger, Jackson, Miss., April 15, 1940, p. 10:

John J. Coman, 85, for 20 years secretary for the old Mississippi state penitentiary board and a brother-in-law of Governor John M. Stone, died yesterday in the family residence at 613 North President. Coman, former resident of Iuka who had been active in Jackson for 40 years, had been ill for several months. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the Pearl Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife; one son, James G. Coman of Mexia, Tex.; and a daughter, Mrs. W. B. Fulkerson of Iuka.

Funeral services will be held at 10 o’clock Monday morning from the Baldwin chapel with Dr. J. B. Hutton, his pastor, officiating, assisted by Dr. B. L. Sutherland of Galloway Memorial Methodist church. Interment will be made in Greenwood cemetery. Active pallbearers will be D. S. Downie, A. A. Greene, jr., E. C. Gaynor, Robert B. Hamilton, Eugene Palmer and J. I. Case. Honorary pallbearers are Governor Earl Brewer, Governor A. H. Longino, Lewis Williams, Walker Wood, A. C. Walthall, W. S. Atkinson, Alf Stone, W. F. Bond, John Stevens, Dr. Sam McLean, Dr. P. R. Greaves, Sam Nunnery, members of the Pearl Masonic lodge, members of the Odd Fellows lodge.
