U.S. Senator. He attended William and Mary College, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Dumfries, Virginia. During the Revolutionary War, he served Continental Army as a Colonel, an aide to General George Washington and was later a Brigadier General in the Virginia Militia. After the war, he was a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates (1783, 94) and a member of the Virginia State Senate (1787-90). In 1794, he was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of James Monroe and served until his death.
