Fritz is a native of Sweden born what is today Karlsgatan 18 in the city of Örebro.

As a young man he worked as a stone worker as his father Anders Hammargren in different location close to his birthplace. Later Hammargren studied at the Göteborg Art School and in Paris with Bourdelle. Hammargren studied at the Goteborg Art School and in Paris with Bourdelle. He immigrated to Hartford, Connecticut in September 1923 on the boat Albania and later became a US Citizen. He exhibited his sculpture at the Brooklyn Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the National Academy of Design among others.

He was a resident of Leonia, NJ until about 1940 and then moved to Los Angeles.

He was part of the creation of Theodore Roosevelt Monument in Tenafly, Bergen Co., NJ (http://www.ettc.net/njarts/details.cfm?ID=1318) in conjunction with Trygve Hammar, and a relief panel in marble for the late Thomas A Edison. His memorial to Charles R. Crane - a sun dial - was erected at the famous Marine Biological Institute of Woods Hole Mass.
