HORACE GREELEY'S SISTER
Death of a Remarkable Woman at an Advanced Age.
The death of Mrs. Lovell Greeley, briefly noted in our dispatches, this morning, occurred at her home at Spring Creek, Warren County, Monday night.
She was a venerable and estimable lady, whose name will at once call to mind one of the greatest men America has ever produced, and one of the saddest events in American history. The lady, in personal appearance and characteristics of heart and mind, more closely resembled her great and illustrious brother than any other relative he ever had. Between the two there was a bond of affection as strong and lasting as the resemblance they bore to each other. Mrs. Greeley, the widow of Lovell Greeley, was a resident of Spring Creek township, Warren County.
She lived on a farm which her illustrious brother gave her more than a score of years ago. She died there Monday night, surrounded by her children and many friends, aged 75 years. Some twenty-five years ago, while on a visit to this section, Horace Greeley invested in considerable land, and among the purchases was a farm at Spring Creek, to which his sister and her husband and family moved. Her husband died some years ago, and she with her children have lived there since. Lovell Greeley, to whom she was married, was a cousin.
She had been sick for several years with paralysis, during which time she was a great sufferer, but her affliction was borne with Christian fortitude. Three children survive her. The oldest son is Zachary Taylor Greeley. The other son is named Kossuth, after the Hungarian patriot, whom Greeley much admired. The other, a daughter, is the wife of John (unreadable), of Spring Creek. The funeral services of Mrs. Greeley were held with burial was in Spring Creek Cemetery.
