US Senator. He was an instructor of Latin at Jefferson College, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1784 and commenced to practice in Washington, Pennsylvania. He was a delegate to the Pennsylvania State constitutional convention, (1789-90). In 1794, he was elected as a Federalist to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the Senate declaring the election of Albert Gallatin void and served until 1803. He also served as President pro tempore of the Senate during the Fifth Congress, during his term. After his term, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 85.
