Add PhotosDuring the Constitution of Cádiz from 1812 to 1814, municipalities gained authority to create cemeteries. A decree on June 23, 1813, by the General and Extraordinary Cortes mandated that municipalities, responsible for public health, establish cemeteries in each locality.
Despite Monterrey not using this power due to Ferdinand VII's return and absolutism's reinstatement, on April 16, 1819, the king ordered suburban cemeteries. The bishop of Monterrey, Ignacio de Aracibia, oversaw a cemetery's creation behind the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. This cemetery had a splendid central dome supported by columns for bodies before interment. Vaults on walls held the wealthy and priests, with others elsewhere.
In 1833, cholera led to La Purísima cemetery's temporary closure. An unfinished Capuchinas convent in present-day streets of Aramberri, Colegio Civil, Ruperto Martínez, and Juárez was used. After controlling the epidemic, La Purísima reopened.
During the 1846-1848 American invasion, the Church of Nuestra Señora del Roble's cemetery became the main burial site.
In 1849, cholera resurged. Dr. Gonzalitos suggested ditch closures, water sanitation, and a new cemetery. This new cemetery was established in existing Aramberri and Venustiano Carranza streets.
